Very popular, squid is as good on the plate as it is on your line. Indeed, as a true bait of choice, it has the particularity of attracting a large variety of very beautiful fish.
For boat fishing, the ancestral and universal technique of vertical jigging is one of the most popular. It is most often practiced in drift with lightweight equipment that is easy to handle.
Which animation technique should be used to fish squid with a jig?
Although simple in appearance due to its mechanical aspect, this technique has many advantages. Thanks to the sudden movements given to the lure (in this case, the jig), it easily attracts the attention and attack reflex of the squid, which, by being titillated often ends up dropping its guard and giving in to temptation!
For squid, you must animate your lure vertically and repeatedly. The principle is to let your jig sink to the bottom and then to perform a dry pull. Then give some slack to let it fall back. This movement, which consists in pulling and then dropping, is done several times in a row: the goal is to prospect the different layers of water on which your prey could move.
As for the key, it is not similar to that of a fish. You will feel a slight suction of the line more then, an immobilization: the squid is simply nibbling quietly at its prey, it is time to sting it.
To raise it, do not give any slack to your line because your squid may come loose! At the end, it is recommended to grab it with a landing net: this will give your cephalopod time to spit all its black ink into the water and not into your boat.
Which equipment should I choose to fish for squid with a jig?
Light and sensitive, the equipment must make it possible to distinguish attacks and spat from cephalopods: bring a long rod if you wish to fish with several jigs mounted in series, a light reel with a 12 or 30 Lbs nylon line or a fine braid (depending on the depth) and an assortment of lures.
What is the best way to fish for squid with a jig?
Generally composed of an assembly of jigs in series, the assembly for fishing squid varies, it can be composed as follows:
- A leaded jig plunging at the bottom of the line + a cage jig (in which to place a whole sardine);
- A diving lead jig at the bottom of the line + a semi-plunging lead jig placed about one meter from the first + a floating jig also at a distance of one meter.
