Trolling is an ancestral method of prospecting large areas and has the advantage of being one of the most effective ways to catch sea bass. From your boat, it can be practiced by hand or with a rod.
Discover tips and tricks that will definitely increase your chances to catch this famous and popular fish!
How to choose the right station?
The success of your fishing trip depends on the choice of stations where you will have to use your lures.
Sandbanks, rock sides, kelp, whitewater areas are undoubtedly suitable areas. In general, favor posts rich in micro-organisms, crustaceans and forage fish are the best because sea bass, a large predatory fish, defines its migrations by letting itself be guided by its gluttony.
Grouped together in a bank, the bass is often taken by a frenzy from spring to autumn: at that moment, his quest for food worries him much more than his fear of being caught, enjoy it! To spot it for sure, nothing could be easier, birds are real allies and will be able to tell you about possible hunts in progress.
Which techniques to use?
Slow or light drag by hand, rod drag or "criminal" drag, to fish for sea bass, there is a lot of choices! A brief overview of the characteristics of these different methods.
The drag by hand
With a trolling triangle and a weighted line of 500 grams of lead, you drag a soft lure (raglou, eel, vitala or other) over the posts in about 8 meters of water. You must then give elbow grease to give regular jolts to the line so that your lures move close to the bottom. Bring a landing net because, by hand, it is not always easy to tire the bar.
The criminal troll
With a leaded line with constant or evolving ballast, you can prospect at the bottom in a more permanent way, thus minimizing the risk of breakage. Consisting of strings of olives from 20 to 50g placed every 30 to 50 m, the lead of the line is distributed, which allows drawing an ideal curve underwater to limit vibrations.
The rod trolling
Depending on the nature of the position, you must choose a diving or slightly diving swimming fish to hang on your rod(s), and reels with fixed or rotating drums should also be part of your equipment. As the hit is often abrupt, during the fight with the bar, make sure to bring it back to the surface continuously to avoid any risk of stalling.
A question of timing
Troll fishing is generally slow. You must regulate the speed of your boat (between 2 and 6 knots) according to the conditions encountered (current, tidal coefficient, water color, depth, brightness, etc.) and the lures used.
At the same time, it is very likely that you will be fishing in addition to other species such as horse mackerel, mackerel, locus, orphy or even starfish!
