The jig is a lure with a crown of hooks. Ideal for squid fishing, it can sometimes imitate the shape of fish, sometimes that of shrimp, be phosphorescent or bright, brightly colored or not. It requires little equipment and brings a lot of satisfaction thanks to the generally abundant catches, provided that you do not neglect any parameter in the choice of your posts and animations.
When to fish for squid with a jig on board?
Depending on the seas, fishing periods differ. In the Mediterranean, squid is caught from September to April, in the Atlantic from September to the end of December, while in the English Channel and the North Sea, March to May and October to November are the preferred months. In short, it is a fishery that allows you to stay active in winter, when most fish are out of the water.
No matter where or when, night fishing, even better, at sunrise and sunset, is by far the most productive.
What are the best weather conditions?
Squid do not appreciate large amounts of fresh water: avoid stormy or rainy weather. The same is true for the wind because to feel your jig and keep it taut, the swell is a brake to the good progress of your fishing.
Which positions should be preferred?
To find them, it is during the day that you have to conduct the survey: look for ink stains that could be visible on the rocks.
From the shore, it is the mouths, port entrances, groins, dikes and cliffs that constitute prime locations.
How deep should I fish for squid on board?
Squids move continuously over the entire water level. Even if they can stay in the same place long enough for you to make several catches, you have to be lucky enough to find the right layer of water at the right time!
Which equipment to use?
Your equipment must be lightweight because you have to support it throughout your fishing trip.
- a rod of about 2.50 m;
- a 2500 reel;
- a fluorocarbon leader preferably;
- a swivel clip;
- and of course... a jig: there are several sizes, weights, coatings, colors and different descent speeds.
(to help you select them, do not hesitate to consult the article dedicated to the choice of the jig).
How to proceed?
It is up to you to choose the animation that seems most appropriate to you, the most famous Bichi-Bachi, Walking the dog or the zipper: each one has its assets.
The important thing is to restart immediately after your first take because it is not uncommon to make prolific takes, so you might as well take advantage of it!
